Delhi police constable Anand Singh, who laid down his life on duty while trying to nab chain snatchers who had robbed a woman street vendor in Shahabad area of outer Delhi, was paid homage on Saturday by his colleagues and dignitaries.
A number of Delhi police teams of specialised units, including the special cell and crime branch, have been formed to arrest the three snatchers who shot dead the 49-year-old constable while he was trying to catch them at Sector 5 of Bawana Industrial area.
“We have zeroed in on the suspects who are likely to be caught very soon,” said a senior police officer.
A wreath laying ceremony was held at New Police Lines ground, Kingsway Camp, where wreaths on behalf of Union home minister and lieutenant-governor of Delhi were laid on the mortal remains of the policeman.
Delhi government minister Gopal Rai laid a wreath on behalf of CM Arvind Kejriwal. Delhi police chief Alok Kumar also laid a wreath on the body of the brave cop.
Anand, in a show of exemplary courage, had fought the three snatchers and had caught two of them with the help of a local vendor. The third snatcher then fired thrice aiming at the cop. One bullet hit him on the chest.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead by doctors. Late Anand Singh had joined Delhi police in 1988 and was presently posted at Shahabad police station. He belonged to Sonipat and is survived by his elderly mother, wife and a daughter and a son aged 22 and 19, respectively.
