Elderly couple die of electrocution in South-East Delhi

An elderly couple died allegedly due to electrocution after their house was flooded with rain water in south-east Delhi’s Sangam Vihar area on Monday morning.

An elderly couple died allegedly due to electrocution after their house was flooded with rain water in south-east Delhi’s Sangam Vihar area on Monday morning. The relatives of the couple had first suspected that they had died of heart attack. The deceased have been identified as Deen Dayal, 75, and his wife Dhanbhati.

“Their room is in the basement, about three-four feet below the ground,” said a police officer investigating the case. “On Sunday night the couple had slept in their grocery shop, which is in their house, but about three-four feet above their living room. In the morning, at around 5 am, when the woman woke up and was trying to step down into her room taking the support of the fridge situated in the room, she got electrocuted,” he added. According to the officer, the elderly man might have got electrocuted while trying to rescue his wife.

Their bodies were found floating in the rain water the next morning by their relatives who then rushed them to the nearest hospital were the doctors declared them brought dead. The police was informed about the incident after which they shifted the bodies to the mortuary for post-mortem. “So far it appears that they may have died of electrocution, but we cannot be sure until their post mortem report confirms.
