More than two dozen people were hurt in a clash that broke out between two communities following a molestation case in northwest Delhi’s Sangam Park area on Saturday evening.

DCP of northwest Delhi, Vijay Singh, said that a man belonging to a different community misbehaved with a woman of another community. He also tried to enter the house of the girl. “The family members of the girl opposed this and brutally thrashed the youth who also called his relatives and family members. The relatives of the youth and girl had verbal duals, which later ensued into fight. They were joined by the locals and it snowballed into a clash between the two groups,” said Mr Singh.

The official further said that as soon as they got the information of the incident, extra police force was immediately deployed at the area to avoid untoward incidents. The police tried to pacify the mob, but they were not ready to budge.

“Locals who had joined them started pelting stone at each other. The angry mob went on rampage and vandalised several public vehicles and also tried to set several vehicles on fire. The police had to resort to a mild lathicharge in a bid to calm them down,” the police said.

The situation was brought under control after two hours.
