An 18-year-old MBBS aspirant committed suicide by hanging herself at her home in south Delhi’s Pushp Vihar on Wednesday afternoon.
The student, identified as Sitara Trishna, was upset because she had not scored well in her medical entrance exams and had secured 1,833th rank. Her name had not figured in the first counselling list of National Eligibility and Entrance Test (Neet) due to which she had not got admission in any of the good medical colleges, the police said. No suicide note was recovered from her possession. She had scored good marks in her Class 12 exams.
According to a senior police official, at the time of the incident she was alone at her house in K-Block of Pushp Vihar ar-ea. Her mother had gone to the hospital, while her father, Trilochan, who is posted as section officer in R.K Puram’s Sashastra Seema Bal, was also away on duty. Trishna’s younger brother and sister had gone to school.
The incident came to light around 1.30 pm when her mother’s call went unanswered and she informed one of the neighbour to check on Trishna. When someone managed to get inside the house through the window, Trishna was found hanging from the ceiling fan. She was rushed to Max Hospital, where she was declared brought dead.
“She went in depression soon after the results were out,” the officer said.
Her body has been preserved in the mortuary and the post-mortem is likely to be conducted on Thursday. Further investigation is underway, the police said.
The police questioned Trisha’s family members. They told them that she lived in Kota, Rajasthan, and prepared for medical entrance exam. Trisha had appeared in the entrance exams for the first time. She was confident of getting admission in one of the ten most prestigious medical colleges.
