DCW chief Swati Maliwal has requested the deputy commissioner (excise) to take necessary action for the closure of a liquor vend at Ajmeri Gate Chowk in central Delhi’s Kamla Market area.
Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chairperson Maliwal has written a letter to deputy commissioner Praveen Mishra, seeking the closure of the vend and have cited law and order problem and violations of the Delhi Excise Rules, 2010.
The DCW had received a complaint from a group of women representing “Sarthak Shiksha Samiti” on the issue.“Please find attached the detailed report submitted by the concerned SDM, which confirms the law and order issue and the violation of excise rules. You are therefore requested to take the necessary action for closure of the said liquor vend and provide a report on action taken to the commission, exercising the powers vested in you by Section 22(2) of the Delhi Excise Rules, 2010,” Ms Maliwal said in her letter.
The commission, after receiving the complaint, had sought a status report on the vend from the sub-divisional magistrate.
According to the SDM’s report, a temple is situated at a distance of only 19 metres from the wine shop and the distance between the mosque and the liquor vend is also approximately 58 metres.
“The Karol Bagh tehsildar also conducted the local enquiries and it is revealed that the chowk, in front of the wine shop, is the pick up and drop point of students of all age groups, which makes the point an accident-prone site, besides the heavy traffic passing through the chowk,” the SDM said in its report.
