A major burglary from a financier’s office in Lahori Gate last week has been solved with the arrest of three people, hours before they fled to Nepal on Sunday.

The victim had told the police that he had lost Rs 25 lakh in the burglary. The police, however, recovered about Rs 54 lakh in cash from the arrested men. More of the burgled money is believed to be with the two other suspects who remain on the run.

The arrested men include Kamal Thapa, a collection agent of the financier. Allegedly, he was the mastermind behind the plan. Rishi Pal, DCP (East), said the plan was made as Thapa always believed that his employer was involved in hawala transactions and was unlikely to report the theft to the police.

He made the burglary proposal to his associates, Deepak, Farman, Raju and Dinesh. He told them it was going to be a successful plan as there was no way that the police would be involved in the investigations.

As per plan, the five broke into the financier’s office last Monday and made away with all the cash that was kept in the safe. They have told the police that they did not count the cash, instead divided the amount in two parts for safe handling.

While the crime took place in North Delhi, it was the East Delhi police that cracked the case. A team from the district was investigating some burglaries in their own area when they were tipped off about this gang. A trap was laid near Anand Vihar bus stand and the suspects were arrested hours before they could flee Delhi in a bus.
