A 25-year-old woman was molested by a man in an inebriated condition in New Delhi’s Connaught Place on Sunday. A senior police official said the accused has been identified as a Amit Sharma (30), who is a graphic designer and lives in East Delhi’s Laxmi Nagar.
The police said the woman is reportedly a Delhi University graduate and is preparing for competitive exams. On Sunday evening, she came to Connaught Place for shopping.
“After shopping, as she was going towards the Metro station, the woman was intercepted by the accused, who was heavily drunk. When Sharma noticed her at an isolated spot, he went up to her and tried to be friendly with her. When the girl ignored him, Sharma got angry and touched her indecently,” said the police officer. The woman then raised an alarm, but the accused tried to gag her. Unable to stop her from screaming, the accused tried to flee. By then, locals had gathered at the place and caught the accused as he tried to flee, said the police official. “As Sharma could not stop the girl from screaming, he let go of her and tried to flee but was caught by few people who started beating him up,” said the police official.
A PCR call was made and the police rushed to the spot immediately. Sharma was arrested and questioned at the Connaught Place police station. “The accused could not even speak properly and was shouting slangs. He was smelling of alcohol from his mouth,” said the police official. Sharma has been booked under Section 354 of Indian Penal Code.
