Hundreds of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal activists on Tuesday staged a protest outside Jawaharlal Nehru University.

The right-wing VHP and Bajrang Dal activists shouted slogans and burnt effigies of the JNU vice-chancellor, Prof. M. Jagadesh Kumar, demanding action against the students involved in alleged anti-national activities. The protesters alleged that the JNU administration had failed to act against some anti-national elements present in the campus and the failure of the administration to weed out such elements is growing day by day.

“People, who were allegedly involved in the February 9 anti-national event, should be thrown out of campus. The JNU administration should also identify people with similar anti-national mindset and they too should be thrown out of the JNU,” said one of the right-wing protesters.

The protesters, however, were not allowed to march inside the campus by the university security and the police personnel deployed outside the university. Bajrang Dal protesters also demanded that the vice-chancellor take action against the teachers supporting the agitation of the left-leaning students.

Meanwhile, the protests inside the campus by the students and the teachers against the varsity administration continued, with some teachers joining in the boycott of the classes. The teachers said they would take classes on nationalism in the varsity lawns.

JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar’s arrest has triggered widespread outrage among the students and teachers and drew severe criticism from non-BJP political parties.
