The Delhi police has identified at least 22 people who were present at the JNU event, including some outsiders after the joint confrontation of three students at the centre of the JNU row — JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya. However, the police has so far been unable to identify four persons who had covered their faces with mufflers, who were spotted allegedly raising anti-national slogans at the event.

The police sources said that they would be questioning all one of them one by one even as dedicated teams have been constituted to find out more about the four “outsiders”, who are believed to have raised anti-national slogans at the event.

“We are verifying the initial leads that we have gathered and will take the next step after concrete evidence,” said a senior police officer.

The police is likely to question the 22 people in the coming days, a police source said, adding that details about the identified persons are yet to be verified.

The investigators are now awaiting the report of JNU high-level committee’s report on the matter which will be the deciding factor whether the varsity’s vice-chancellor, who had withdrawn permission for the February 9 event, or other members of the committee will be listed as witnesses in the case, the source said, adding, “We may, nonetheless, question at least four JNU teachers in connection with the matter.”

The police said that they have also starting preparing a file of evidence that includes the raw version of the video clip obtained from a news channel on the basis of which the case was registered, the letters of communication between the police and the University authorities and the poster of the event, which the police claim will help prove criminal conspiracy in connection with the matter.

The cops added that the ones who had published the posters for the event and distributed them will be considered the “main organisers”, adding, “the documents will soon be sent to a forensic laboratory.”
