An Indian cricketer, currently touring Zimbabwe, with the national team has been reportedly held for alleged rape of a local woman.
The Assistant Commissioner of Police, Charity Charamba (also the spokesperson) confirmed the incident and said: “There are allegations of rape against an Indian national by a Zimbabwe woman.”
“We have investigated and forwarded the case to the courts for determination and we wait the outcome. He appeared in court on Saturday,” she told New Zimbabwe, an English daily.
The identity of the player has been kept a secret. The situation is complicated for the revelation of the name could sour relations between the two nations and ruin the reputation of cricket bigwig BCCI.
The police and intelligence officials reached the team hotel in Harare and the situation went out of control. A representative from the Asian nation tried to stop the player’s arrest.
However, a source present at the hotel lobby said that the woman could have been drugged, she was apparently loitering around the premises. The woman said she woke up in the player’s room and had no idea how she reached there.
