    Tata Motors’ decision to increase the prices of the Harrier has worked in favour of the XUV500 as the recently launched W3 variant is now Rs 76,000 more affordable than the base XE variant of the Harrier. To know how the XUV500 stacks up against the Harrier, head here.

    The Tata Harrier is based on Tata’s OmegaArc platform which has been derived from the Land Rover Discovery Sport’s D8 platform. Powering the Tata SUV is a 2.0-litre Fiat-sourced diesel engine that’s also found in the Jeep Compass. While the Compass puts out 170PS, the Harrier is only available in a lower state of tune, putting out 140PS of power. Peak torque, however, remains the same at 350Nm. Whereas the Jeep Compass diesel is now available with a 9-speed auto ‘box in Trailhawk guise, the Harrier can only be had with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

    The Harrier gets plenty of kit on the top variants. These include an 8.8-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 9-speaker JBL sound system, a 7-inch multi-info driver’s display, cruise control, steering mounted audio controls, climate control, auto headlamps, and more. Safety features on the top-spec variant include six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, hill hold control, traction control and rear parking sensors with rear camera.

    Meanwhile, Tata is busy developing the seven-seater version of the Harrier SUV that was first showcased at the Geneva Motor Show with the Buzzard nameplate. The seven-seater variant of the Harrier was spied testing recently. Head here to know more about it. It will get the same 2.0-litre Multijet engine as the five-seater version, albeit uprated to produce 170PS.

    Incidentally, the 170PS Multijet engine will also be present in the more powerful version of the Harrier soon. Apart from the 6-speed manual gearbox, both SUVs will also get a 6-speed automatic gearbox sourced from Hyundai. The more powerful version of the Harrier could also get 4x4 capabilities as well. Apart from this, Tata is also planning to upgrade the Harrier’s engine to meet the upcoming BS6 emission norms.
