Mumbai: After a day-long lull, Friday saw intermittent spells of rain in few parts of the city. Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that heavy showers are expected over the weekend in Mumbai, Thane and Palghar regions.

“The southwest monsoon has been vigorous over Saurashtra and Kutch and active over Madhya Maharashtra and Gujarat region,” read the IMD report. “Heavy to very heavy spells are expected in parts of Mumbai, Thane and Palghar on Saturday and Sunday,” said an IMD official.   

During the last 24 hours since 8.30 am on Thursday, Colaba and Santacruz observatories recorded 3.6mm and 3.2mm of rainfall respectively. However, on Friday, the rainfall increased its intensity comparatively during noon.

As per a report by Skymet Weather, a private weather forecasting agency, the comeback of rains will occur due to the offshore trough along the west coast and the  cyclonic circulation developed in south Gujarat, which is expected to become more marked in the next 24 hours.

According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon is strong to vigorous over the west-central and southwest Arabian Sea, moderate to strong over the northeast, east-central and southeast Arabian Sea.
