Kolkata: Continuing her tirade against the Centre, chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday alleged that the common people’s money were being looted from the banks. Accusing the Modi government of “destroying” the people’s faith in the banking system, she also sought from the Central government an account of money swindled so far in wake of the PNB scam.

Targeting the BJP at a programme in Malda, Ms Banerjee alleged, “Four years have passed since the new government came to power at the Centre in New Delhi. But the people’s money are being looted from the banks. Banks are the places where we trust to for keep our money in deposits for safety.”

She added, “But they are being destroyed. Where will the people keep their money? The Centre must give an account on how much money have been looted. It should explain why the petrol and diesel prices are shooting up. Why people are being killed? Either it should give an account or it should step down from the power.”

According to the chief minister, the BJP government is planning to introduce the Financial Resolution and Deposit Insurance (FRDI) Bill using which it can forfeit a customer’s savings or fixed deposits. Ms Banerjee sought the withdrawal of the proposed bill immediately.

The Trinamul supremo claimed, “Two to three individuals escape after looting thousands of crores of money from banks. No one is taking steps against them. But 12,000 farmers have committed suicide after failing to either get bank loans or repay their loans. And the central government is making up the losses by reducing the interest rate on the provident fund, fixed deposits and small saving schemes.” She also demanded adequate steps to be taken to prevent the loss of the banks.
