Celebrating the brilliance of women through Swayam Siddha
Recipients of award included social activist Kanta Chakraborty along with performing artist and choreographer Tanusree Shankar among others.
Rotary Club of Calcutta Metro City organized Swayam Siddha 12 (it’s twelfth edition) at the Satyajit Ray Auditorium, ICCR on 21st March’18. The University Women’s Association of Calcutta partnered the Rotary Club of Calcutta Metro City along with Orange Corp.
Speaking about the event, a club representative said, “Over the past 14 years we have acknowledged the brilliance of iconic super women who are role models to the women of our society.”
He went on to add, “The program was envisioned by our Immediate Past District Governor Shyamashree Sen and her fellow club members in 2004 to commemorate the International Women’s Day. The genesis of the day can be traced back to then Russian capital Petrograd now known as St Petersburg when on 8th March women protested on the streets of Moscow for the end of food shortages and Czarism. Their success created a global movement and finally after 60 years of struggle in 1977 the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed March 8 as the UN Day for women's rights and world peace.”
The recipients this year included
Kanta Chakraborty (Social activist running a school for the homeless orphans and street children at the Dum Dum Railway Station), Sharmeela Chatterjee (Entrepreneur who rose from grass root level and now has an agency supplying manpower across continents), Nandini Chakravorty (Mining industry entrepreneur ) , Ekta Bhattacharjee ( creative designer and visual artist), Dr. Madhumanti Maitra ( voice artist and elocutionist) and Tanusree Shankar ( performing artist and choreographer).
The program was also attended by past Swayam Siddha recipients as Agnimitra Paul, Sanchita Bhattacharya, Jolly Chanda.
The musical program was a treat for connoisseurs with Santoor legend Tarun Bhattacharya, Percussion guru Prodyut Mukherjee and Guitarist Vikramjit Tuki Banerjee. They presented Raga Ganga on stage followed by an exciting musical conversation.
