Militants strike in Manipur, cop hurt

GUWAHATI: A police personnel was injured in an ambush by armed militants in Moreh in Tengnoupal district near International border with Myanmar on Saturday.

According to police, the incident took place at about 3.30 pm on Saturday. Informing that state police forces retaliated and were engaged in an encounter, security sources said that more details are awaited. The militant used IED and explosives to ambush the security forces, security sources said, adding that more enforcement was rushed to the area.The injured police personnel was shifted to Assam Rifle hospital. Security sources said that the encounter was still going on. The armed militants are suspected to have entered Moreh from Myanmar. However their identity was yet to be established. 

Meanwhile, a village guard was shot dead by unidentified gunman on Saturday at Kadangband in Manipur’s Imphal West district.

The deceased has been identified as Jamesbond Ningombam. He was guarding the village when he was gunned down by suspected militants from a nearby hill.

Police said that the incident took place at around 3.30 am.
