Statewide farmers' 10-day strike begins
NASHIK: There was a shortfall of farm produce in most agricultural produce market committees (APMC) in Maharashtra as farmers began their 10-day agitation on Friday.
Exactly a year ago, farmers in Maharashtra had staged a 10-day strike, which created pressure for the state’s farm-loan waiver scheme. The farmers, this time, are demanding an unconditional loan waiver, 1.5 times the current rate for farm produce and implementation of assurances given to farmers by the state government after the farmers’ long march to Mumbai last year.
Speaking to The Asian Age, Kisan Sabha leader Dr Ajit Navale said that a high level meeting of all farmer organisations was arranged at Azad Maidan in Mumbai on Saturday afternoon. The farmers’ representatives will then decide their further strategy and action,” he said. Dr Navale also urged the government to come forward and fulfil the demands of farmers, for which they had waited for one year.
Meanwhile, as the strike began on Friday, farmers in Bolthan village of Nandgaon tehsil of Nashik poured milk on the roads and expressed their support for the strike. Rashtriya Kisan Mahasangh, Kisan Ekta Manch, Kisan Kranti and other organisations supported the strike.
