Delhi, Mumbai Roads Cave In, No Casualties
This is the second incident of cave-in in Mumbai this monsoon
New Delhi: A significant portion of a road in Janakpuri, West Delhi, collapsed due to a sewer line leakage, officials reported on Wednesday. The incident took place on Tuesday night, and the area was cordoned off to prevent any accidents. Visuals of the incident went viral on social media. Delhi experienced 0.2 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period leading up to 8.30 am on Wednesday. The maintenance department has been informed, and repairs are expected to be carried out. The traffic police department alerted commuters about the situation through a tweet, advising them to avoid the affected stretch.
The road cave-in was attributed to a burst sewer line of the Delhi Jal Board, and the Public Works Department (PWD) is awaiting repair work by the DJB before restoring the road.
Virendra Sachdeva, Delhi BJP president, criticised the Arvind Kejriwal government, highlighting the deteriorating condition of Delhi's roads and demanding accountability from PWD minister Atishi of the Aam Aadmi Party.
He also referred to a recent incident involving the death of an autorickshaw driver at an unguarded construction site of the PWD.
Meanwhile, more than 40 vehicles were damaged after felling into a massive crater, that resulted from a road cave-in at Chunabhatti in Mumbai on Wednesday. The incident happened during the ongoing piling work for a housing project of a construction company.
According to the BMC officials, the incident happened at 9.30 am as a part of a road caved in near an under-construction site at Rahul Nagar close to the Eastern Express Highway in Chunabhatti area. It resulted into a crater of nearly 25 feet inside the excavated area dug for the building construction.
Several two-wheelers and four-wheelers, which were parked on the road, were damaged after felling into the crater. A video of the incident went viral, in which a white car was seen slipping down into the excavated area when the road caved-in.
However, no injuries were reported and the affected area was cordoned-off by the fire bridge, civic staff and police, who rushed to the spot. The crater was barricaded and traffic was diverted to ensure the safety of commuters.
This is the second incident of cave-in in Mumbai this monsoon. Last week, a road caved-in due to heavy rains near Magathane Metro station area.
