It was supposed to be a night of celebration, people were gathered on the streets of the French city of Nice on Thursday evening to mark Bastille day celebrations -- but the evening of revelry ended with tears, blood, screams after a truck rammed into the crowd, killing at least 80 people, making it the France’s worst terror attack in 2016.

The French National Day commemorates the Storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789, an important event in Paris in the French Revolution as well as the Fête de la Fédération which celebrated the unity of the French people on 14 July 1790.

In the aftermath of the terrifying incident, a grisly video footage of the ghastly incident has appeared online that shows people screaming in terror and running for their lives where thousands of adults and children had gathered to see the Bastille Day fireworks display.

Shot by an unidentified person, the video footage shows scores of dead bodies lying on the road as terrified citizens struggle to find their friends and relatives among the deceased.

A truck loaded with weapons and hand grenades drove onto a sidewalk for more than a mile, ploughing through Bastille Day revelers who'd gathered to watch fireworks in the French resort city of Nice late Thursday. At least 80 people were killed before police killed the driver, authorities said.

It was not immediately clear who would have been behind an attack, but France has recently seen a spate of dramatic assaults by jihadist groups, including the Islamic State group which straddles Iraq and Syria.

President Francois Hollande said in a televised statement that all of France was under an "Islamist terrorist threat" and extended by three months a state of emergency that has been in place since the November attacks that killed 130 in Paris was to end July 26.
