En route to Yuvraj’s to 12-ball 50, the left-handed southpaw became the first cricketer to smash the quickest T20I 50 in the shortest form.

It has been 12 years since Yuvraj Singh turned on his smashing mode to hit six consecutive 6’s in a single over off Stuart Broad. On September 19, 2007, the left-handed southpaw was in a thrashing mood to become the first cricketer to hit six sixes in an over in a T20I. (Photo: BCCI)

Mumbai: It has been 12 years since Yuvraj Singh turned on his smashing mode to hit six consecutive 6’s in a single over off Stuart Broad. On September 19, 2007, the left-handed southpaw was in a thrashing mood to become the first cricketer to hit six sixes in an over in a T20I.

On that very day, India locked horns with England in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup. India had to defeat England on that day in order to secure their place in the finals. However, when Yuvraj came in to bat, India were at 171/3 after the 18th over in the first innings.

Yuvraj walked in to the middle to join Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, just after India lost the wicket of Robin Uthappa. As soon as the slog overs started, the duo began to accelerate the pace of scoring and take India to a commanding position.

When Andrew Flintoff came in to bowl the 18th over, the flamboyant all-rounder hit two fours, and Yuvraj’s smashing mood infuriated the England all-rounder. After Yuvraj hit two boundaries in Flintoff’s over, the duo got engaged in a big verbal spat which was finally halted by the on-field umpires.

Describing the verbal altercation between Yuvraj and Flintoff, the flamboyant batsman told the Star Sports, “When you play for the country the emotions are always high. You can get angry too... Flintoff probably didn’t like the shots I played off his bowling in the previous over so he had a few words to say and that just motivated me.”

Nevertheless, the verbal spat brought the rampant mode out of Yuvraj, who, during the 19th over, smashed England pacer Stuart for six continuous sixes guided India to a mammoth total of 218.

Due to the Flintoff’s altercation with the former Indian cricketer, Stuart Broad had to face the wrath of an angered Yuvraj, who blasted six consecutive sixes out of the park to become the first cricketer to hit six sixes in an over in a limited-overs format.

En route to Yuvraj’s to 12-ball 50, the left-handed southpaw became the first cricketer to smash the quickest T20I 50 in the shortest format. This record has remained intact till now. Moreover, Yuvraj also remains the lone first and only Indian to hit six 6s in an over in shortest format.

Coming back to the 2007 T20 semi-final, the 2011 World Cup player of the tournament’s went on a blitzkrieg mode which helped him to score 58 (three 4s and seven 6s) from 16 balls as India posted 218/4. While England managed to score to 200/6.

Since today is the 12th anniversary of Yuvraj’s six hitting record, the Board for Cricket Control in India (BCCI) posted a collage of every sixes Yuvraj had hit.  The BCCI posted the collage on Twitter with a caption stating, “#OnThisDay in 2007, @YUVSTRONG12 etched his name into the record books by hitting six sixes in an over.”

Along with BCCI, IPL Champions Mumbai Indians also tweeted, "#OnThisDay in 2007, @YUVSTRONG12  smashed Stuart Broad for 6 sixes in an over and the rest is HISTORY."
