The day the watchfulness becomes the host, it remains 24 hours with you.

Two years ago, Nipun Mehta, in his talk in Assumption College on the subject of “Embrace the Grace”, said something very mysterious and unique: There is a legend of a tribe in Africa where the birth-date of a child is counted not from when they were born, nor even conceived but from the day that the child was a thought in its mother’s mind. When a woman decides that she will have a child, she goes off and sits under a tree, by herself, and listens until she can hear the song of the child that wants to come. And when the mother is pregnant, she teaches that child’s song to the women of the village, so that when the child is born, they will welcome her with that song.

This seems to be unbelievable to the modern, rational and scientific mind, but there is a realm of unknown and unknowable life that the modern scientific mind could never fathom — but which may be in the realm of the hearts of simple, sensitive and uneducated human beings. The legends tell us that such innocent people did exist and they could communicate with unembodied lifeforms. Such people may be in existence even today.

In the past, this was something natural with natural people, but people who have become unnatural in the modern world could make it natural if they go deep within themselves through deep meditation. Too much attention being sucked towards the outside world has made human beings really shallow and hollow. They are very educated and rational but without any substance that happens in the flowering of the heart and soul.

It is not just the African legend, all the great souls such as Krishna and Buddha, Jesus and Mary Magdalene, Kabir, Raidas, Gorakh, Nanak, Meera, Ashtavakra and Zarathusthra and so many other mystics have their mystical legends.

Osho tells us in his talk, The Buddha: The Emptiness of the Heart: It knows that the people who are compassionate, people of heart, have a certain wisdom which is not knowledge, a certain insight, a certain intuitiveness which cannot be taught. They can see things and feel things. They are sensitive to things which are not available to the mind. So people start thinking that there are possibilities of the heart having wisdom. But they don’t know that the heart is your emptiness. And out of your emptiness, a clarity, a transparency arises which can see things which you cannot intellectually infer. This is wisdom. To make it complete, it has to be said, “the wisdom of the empty heart”.

Osho shows us the way: When you are in deep meditation, you feel a great serenity, a joy that is unknown to you, a watchfulness that is a new guest. Soon this watchfulness will become the host. The day the watchfulness becomes the host, it remains 24 hours with you. And out of this watchfulness, whatever you do has a wisdom in it. Whatever you do shows a clarity, a purity, a spontaneity and a grace.
