Athawale was making the customary speech on the behalf of his party to welcome the new Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla.
New Delhi: The Republican Party of India (Athawale) (RPI (A)) chief and Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawale made a humorous remark in the parliament which left the house in splits.
Athawale, who is known for his poetic humour, was making the customary speech on the behalf of his party to welcome the new Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla.
In his address, Athawale took a jibe at the Congress party and Congress president Rahul Gandhi on the party’s electoral loss.
He rhymed Rome (capital of Italy) with the new Lok Sabha speaker “Birla Om” which could be taken as a reference to the United Progressive Alliance chaiperson Sonia Gandhi.
He urged the speaker to blacklist those members who gather in the well of the house to protest against the treasury benches.
He referred to Rahul as his friend and said that as politicians keep changing side, even he changed his political affiliation after the Congress lost the election.
Athawale revealed that many Congressmen were asking him to align with the Congress party but he had sensed the political mood of the country and thus, allied with the Bharatiya Janata Party.
