VHP writes to Vinod Tawde over ‘biased’ teachers awards
A local branch of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad has written to the education minister Vinod Tawde against the allegedly biased approach of committees set up to shortlist teachers for the best teacher awards every year. The VHP has alleged that the committees are influenced by lobbying for nomination of teachers for state and national level awards, as a result of which deserving teachers do not get nominated. In the letter, VHP has demanded that Mr Tawde disband the existing committee and constitute a new, ‘unbiased’ committee to shortlist teachers for the 2016 awards.
The letter written by the chief of the Borivali wing of VHP has alleged that since the past four years the committee entrusted with shortlisting the names of teachers and principals from Mumbai for Best Teacher award has been showing a bias and not been doing its work efficiently. As a result of this, the achievements of many deserving teachers and principals have gone unnoticed, the letter said. “Rather than shortlisting the deserving candidate on merit the names are being given as per the whims of the committee members,” alleges the letter.
Taking a sarcastic barb at Mr Tawde, the letter says that while many policy changes have been made after the new government came to power based on the often “revolutionary” suggestions of the minister, it is “surprising the committee remains unchanged”. The letter has demanded that the committee be dissolved and replaced with a new committee consisting of upright, unbiased and sincere members to nominate teachers and principals for the national and state awards.
As Mr Tawde is in Delhi for the no detention policy committee meeting, he was unavailable for comment.
