In a recent incident, thieves who broke into a jewellery shop and stole goods worth more than Rs 1 crore, tried to outsmart the cops by destroying CCTV footage to hide their tracks.

The stolen goods include about 3.5 kilos of gold and silver worth Rs 27 lakh.The incident took place at Hiranandani Estate, near Ghodbunder Road, Thane on Tuesday night. The police said the robbers thieves broke into Leelaz Jewel Paradise after midnight and robbed silver, gold and diamond jewellery worth more than Rs1 crore. The police added that the culprits also destroyed the camera that recorded their activity and washed away the tape in a wash-basin before leaving the jewellery shop.

On Wednesday morning, the manager of the shop entered his workplace and was shocked to see gold and silver items missing. He immediately filed a police complaint. A police official said, “During primary investigation we found the shop had been broken into by cutting through its back window. We came to know the owner of the shop is way from Maharashtra on holiday. After inquiring with everyone, we found the security guard of the shop missing. We have doubts about him. There might have been four robbers who entered the shop.”

The officer added that the robbers had used a gas cutter to cut the shop’s window. “The images are a bit unclear on the other CCTV cameras and we have sent it for cleaning. Once the clear footage arrives, we will be able to nab the culprits. We have registered the case against four unknown accused as the faces haven’t been detected,” he said.
