Scrutiny fee for high-rises doubled

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to double the scrutiny fee for high-rise buildings in the city from '50,000 to '1 lakh.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to double the scrutiny fee for high-rise buildings in the city from '50,000 to '1 lakh. The scrutiny fees will have to be paid for every wing of the building having a height of 70 metres and more.

The technical committee for high-rises was formed by the state government in the year 2004. The present committee is headed by former high court Justice P.S. Patankar and have chief engineer (development planning), chief fire officer, R.S. Jangid, IIT, KK Sangle, VJTI College, Dr Rakesh Kumar, Neeri and Pankaj Joshi, architect, as its members.

Any building having a height of 70 metres (22 floors) and more is considered as a high-rise. Mumbai presently has more than 2,000 high rises and many more in the pipeline.

The scope of high-rise committee’s work is to scrutinise the proposals of development of buildings taller than 70 metres. In addition to this, the committee is supposed to advise on the technical aspects of development works carried out as per the DP rules and also to issue suggestions to the state government about city’s DP.

“The Supreme Court two years ago had directed to increase the remuneration of committee members. Taking into account the verdict and also rise in administrative and transport cost, we have decided to double the scrutiny cost of high-rise buildings. The '1 lakh fees will be for every wing of the building even though they have the same foundation,” said a civic official.
