The 30-year-old police constable from the Mumbai Police who was arrested late on Monday night for allegedly abusing, assaulting and molesting a young lady under heavy influence of alcohol has been remanded to police custody by a magistrate’s court on Tuesday.

A departmental inquiry has been initiated against him and he has been officially suspended from service. Section 185 of the Motor Vehicle Act, has been slapped on accused Pravin Nalavde for driving his bike under the heavy influence of alcohol.

According to the Powai police, Nalavde has been in the force for a decade. He is from rural Maharashtra and bagged the job after the demise of his father, who worked in the force.

On Monday, Nalavade, who was on his weekly off, got more drunk than the usual. Deputy commissioner of police, zone X, Vinayak Deshmukh said Nalavde does not have any past incident of creating trouble under the influence of alcohol while on duty. “His blood report shows alcohol content,” said Mr Deshmukh.

According to the Powai police, the incident occurred at 7.30 pm on the Marol Maroshi road. Nalavde is posted at the Andheri police station. Nalavade and the rickshaw in which the complainant was travelling were moving in the same direction. Nalavde’s bike bumped into the rickshaw. This resulted in a heated argument between the rickshaw driver and Nalavde, who started hitting the former. When the complainant interrupted him, Nalavde slapped her and caught her hand and passed lewd comments.
