A 35-year-old man murdered his wife and then committed suicide in a chawl in Jogeshwari (west) on Saturday. The two acts were committed in the presence of their three children with the eldest one being a three-year-old boy. The police is yet to ascertain the reason for the man having taken the drastic step.
According to the Amboli police, the incident was reported at 7.30 pm by local residents. It took place in a room in Havaladar chawl on SV Road in the Amboli area. The deceased, Rajesh Jadhav, had a “huge fight” with his wife Amrapali. The neighbours heard their screams around 4.30 pm. The incident is reported to have occurred after this period.
Jadhav was a rickshaw driver while his wife used to look after the house and the children. “While the eldest is a boy aged three, the younger two are girls. Prima facie it looks like Jadhav strangulated his wife and then hanged himself. All this happened in the presence of the children. The couple had a big fight before the incident,” said a police inspector.
Assistant commissioner of police Arun Chavan of the DN Nagar division said, “It looks like a case of murder and then suicide. We have sent both the bodies for post mortem after which the cause of death will be ascertained.” Jadhav left behind a suicide note saying nobody should be held responsible for the acts.
