GRP taps into informers, cracks Rs1 crore jewellery theft
The government railway police (GRP) has cracked a case of bag theft where two repeat offenders had stolen gold ornaments worth around 'crore rupees from a gold trader. Ornaments worth around Rs 67.58 lakh have been recovered and probe is on to recover rest of the amount, said GRP commissioner Madhukar Pandey.
According to the crime branch of GRP, the incident took place on November 4 around 7.40 am. The complainant Pradeep Porwal (51) had rushed to CST railway station from his residence in Bhayender. Mr Porwal reached CST platform no. 15 and kept one of his bags down when one of the accused quietly fled with his bag within seconds. Mr Pandey said, “First the statement of the complainant said Rs 25 lakh was stolen but later he informed us the jewelry was worth Rs1 crore.” Senior police inspector Vinod Chavan of GRP crime branch said soon after receiving the FIR they started searching for habitual offenders. Like many times in the past, the CCTV camera surveillance at the CST did not capture the incident, leaving the GRP to fend for themselves.
The GRP then tapped their informers in the jewelry market and on record criminals. Finally, acting on a tip off, they nabbed Amarchand Rajkumar Chouhan (27) and Vasiulla Riyazali Ansari (26), both residents of Reay road. Both have prior criminal records and have been remanded to police custody.
