GRP busts gang from Bangladesh

Government Railway Police (GRP) Thane on Monday busted a gang of dacoits, arresting six persons from the general compartment of Kamayani Express at Thane station.

Government Railway Police (GRP) Thane on Monday busted a gang of dacoits, arresting six persons from the general compartment of Kamayani Express at Thane station.

The police recovered three swords, a magnet and a huge cache of cigarettes and chilly powder from the gang. GRP officials identified the accused as Morshed Gaen, Chunntat Gazi, Ami Ali, Mohammed Qureshi, Rafique Shaha and Bablu Shet, all residents of Bangladesh.

The arrests were made on the basis of a tip-off received by PI Suresh Patil, the police said.

“Our team laid a trap to arrest them and around 1.30pm at Thane railway station, we arrested them. The team has several cases registered against them and they always choose different trains as their target. They are all Bangladeshis and keep changing residences in Mumbai as they don’t have any proper location,” said Mr Patil.

“We came to know their modus operandi a few days ago,” he further added, saying, “They get into the general compartment and target some family travellers there.

“They threaten them with knives or if needed, chilly powder and snatch all their expensive possessions.” he said.

“They then get down in between by pulling the emergency chain.”

Police officials said there are over 34 cases registered against the group in different railway police stations. Two group members are still absconding.

All of them came to Mumbai last year to get jobs. However, the person who promised them jobs forced them into house robbery.

Later, they fought with him and started their own gang.

A case has been registered at Thane GRP Station under Sections 399 (making preparation to commit dacoity) and 402 (sssembling for purpose of committing dacoity) of the Indian Penal Code and different sections of the Arms Act.
