Government issues notification to transfer 71 Chhota Rajan cases to CBI
The Maharashtra government has issued notification to transfer nearly 71 cases registered against underworld don Chhota Rajan to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Following orders, the Mumbai police will transfer all cases registered against Rajan to CBI.
The Mumbai police will give details of all cases to CBI, including 15 cases that were put up as part of a red corner notice against Rajan, two cases registered against him with Navi Mumbai police, and one with Pune CID.
However, investigators are riddled with confusion as to where trial of the current cases will continue.
On Tuesday, a special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court will hear the journalist J. Dey murder case, but officials are unsure how it will pan out. CBI officials have asked for a status report on the Dey murder case which is currently being heard in a Mumbai court. Hence, crime branch (CB) officials have asked CBI to send one of their officers to the court where investigators may move an application before the court including current developments related to the case.
“According to honorable court guidance, we will take next steps in the case. The central agency may also come up with a suggestion of what can be done hereafter in the ongoing case,” said deputy commissioner and Mumbai police spokesperson, Dhananjay Kulkarni.
Earlier, after Rajan was brought to India, investigations into cases against him were transferred to the CBI. According to CBI sources, Rajan’s CBI custody, which was to end on Monday, has been extended by three days till November 19 in a case of alleged procurement of passport on the basis of fake documents.
