Couple arrested for cheating man of Rs 45 crore
The NM Joshi Marg police on Wednesday arrested a man and her wife who had cheated a man off Rs 45 crore by promising to double their investments within a short period. The economic offences wing of the crime branch is looking into the case.
According to police, accused Ashok Chatraj and his wife Rajani Chatraj own a company called Siesta Logistics, which that invests in infrastructure near Elphinstone. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the company has duped complainant Rajiv Kapoor, who runs a private consulting firm, of '45 crore. He met the accused in 2010 and they lured him to invest money in their investment firm by promising to double his money. The parties signed an agreement for the same and the complainant invested crores of rupees in 2014 and waited till 2015 for it to double. However, despite Mr Kapoor asking the accused many times to return his money, they refused to do so, police said.
Mr Kapoor later registered a complaint with the NM Joshi police over the issue. Following an investigation, the case was registered on November 16 against Ashok Chatraj and Rajani Chatraj. They were booked under IPC sections of 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 406 of IPC (Punishment for criminal breach of trust).
