BMC failed to supply debris to Kanjur dumping ground

Corporators have alleged that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is failing to supply the required debris to the Kanjurmarg dumping ground.

Corporators have alleged that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is failing to supply the required debris to the Kanjurmarg dumping ground. Instead the debris is being dumped at the Mulund dumping ground, raising the possibility of a scam, they said.

According to the civic officials, the civic body — while inking an agreement for waste treatment plant at Kanjurmarg — had assured it would provide 2,000 metric tonnes of debris daily. However, about 800 MT of debris is being sent to the Mulund dumping ground, whose capacity has already been exhausted.

“If the BMC has agreed to supply debris to Kanjur dumping ground, why it is not doing this ” said Samajwadi Party group leader and corporator Rais Shaikh. “In order to cater to requirements at Kanjur dumping ground, there are reports that debris has been collected from private developers, which are willing to pay thousands of rupees for its disposal. There is a possibility of a scam in this and the BMC should look into it.”

According to corporators, there has also been confusion over the total quantity of debris collected daily in the city. In the group leaders meeting, the civic body said that city produces daily 700 to 800 MT of debris. However, in the smart city presentation, the BMC has stated that about 1,200 tonnes debris is being daily generated in the city.

“We have asked the solid waste management department to carry out an audit of debris produced in the city. If there are any irregularities, we will take action,” said a senior civic official.

Mumbai’s total waste generation is approximately 10,500 metric tonnes, of which 3,700 tonnes is sent to the Deonar dumping ground and another 2,600 metric tonnes to the dumping ground at

Mulund and 3,000 tonnes to Kanjurmarg. About 1,200 tonnes are debris and silt collected by the corporation on an everydaybasis.
