Three youths, including two students, were arrested by the Turbhe Railway Police Force (RPF) staff for assaulting an on-duty railway officer outside Koparkhairne railway station with a sharp object and then robbing him of his mobile phone worth Rs 12,000.

All the accused were in the age group between 20 to 22 years and were residents of Khoparkhairane in Navi Mumbai. According to RPF officer, Amol Sankhpal (20) is an engineering student who was addicted to brown sugar and had just been released from a Malad rehabilitation center. Pramod Chavan (22) was addicted to MD drug and was studying a hotel management course, while Sushant Dange (21) was doing an industrial electronic course.

On November 24, the station manager was going towards the place where a signal repair work was going on. He was in the middle of the track when the three accused held him, beat him up badly, snatched his valuables and fled the place.

RPF officer Suresh Atri said, “They are all drug addicts and the railway track is their hub for illegal activities. We registered a case after the station manager narrated the incident to us and started a search for them. Following a tip-off, we arrested them from the Koparkhairne area and recovered the mobile phone and the chain of the station manager.”

“They all belong to well-to-do family but had a habit of consuming drugs (brown sugar). They badly needed money for that. Therefore, they committed the robbery. We have arrested them under IPC section 153,146,147,174.” Mr Atri added.
