2 held for cheating insurance firm
The N.M. Joshi Marg police has registered cases against two persons for cheating Birla Life Insurance Company, using different modus operandi. Private investigator, Guruswami Naikar, has filed a complaint saying that in one case, a man got '20 lakh as insurance money by showing his living father as dead while in the other case, a lady got '8 lakh in insurance this year by producing her son’s forged death certificate, the son having died two years ago.
Accused Bhondu Prasad Kumar submitted his father’s death certificate and official health report to the company and claimed insurance money. When company officials went to check authenticity of the documents, they got the green signal from all concerned and cleared his insurance policy. However, they smelled a rat and got Mr Naikar to investigate the case. That’s when they found Mr Kumar’s father alive and living alone as his son had kicked him out of the house.
In the other case, accused Meena Ravalkar claimed insurance for her son’s death in 2015 whereas her son had died in 2013 itself. Company officials then decided to lodge a police complaint about fraud carried out.
A police officer said, “There is a big racket going on all over the country. There are some doctors giving fake death certificates, all health-related reports. Also these people target poor people and senior citizens in these rackets. They use all their documents and then claim insurance and give them five to ten per cent from it. Some cases are revealed while some are not.”
