1 killed, 13 injured in helium cylinder blast
Explosion occurred in Kalyan school
A balloon seller was killed after a helium gas cylinder used to inflate balloons exploded at the Gurukul School of Kalyan during a sports event in the school. Thirteen people, including six children and seven of the students’ family members were injured in the incident and have been hospitalised. Two of them are critical and have been shifted to JJ Hospital.
The police is investigating how these helium gas cylinders were allowed in the school grounds as these cylinders are banned. The police has filed an first information report against the school authorities and the deceased balloon seller.
During the sports competition, some of the children and their parents had gathered in front of the balloon seller Ramdaras Daulatprasad and were buying balloons from him.
“Suddenly at around 4 pm, the cylinder burst and people slumped to the ground and were badly hurt. Others who were standing close to the stall also suffered burn injuries,” a woman, who witnessed the incident, said.
The blast triggered panic and the police was called immediately. “We got a call from the school management and soon we reached on the spot. The injured were taken to the Metro Hospital and Ace Hospital. Daulatprasad was declared brought dead. Two others, who have been critically injured are Prashant Chaudhary, Priyanka More.
A police team has seized the cylinders and other belongings of the balloon seller. “We have seized two gas cylinders from the stall. We are also investigating whether helium was used in the balloons or not. The Gurukul School committee members will also be questioned in this connection,” DCP Sanjay Jadhav said.
