Mumbai: After the Congress accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Shiv Sena alliance of misleading Mumbaikars on the property tax waiver issue, the BJP on Thursday made it clear that all components of property tax would be waived off in future bills.

The process of issuing the state government’s ordinance for this is underway, said Mumbai BJP chief Ashish Shelar.

“In case of the Brihanmumbai Munici-pal Corporation (BMC), the civic rules have been changed to waive off the general component of property tax for houses up to 500 sq ft. However, to waive off other components of property tax, you need to change the state rules. The process of issuing the state government ordinance in this regard is on,” said Mr Shelar.

The Shiv Sena ruled BMC announced that the property tax for houses up to 500 sq ft would be waived off. However, Mumbai Congress chief Milind Deora criticised the move saying that it was a complete farce.

“The ordinance issued by the state government is a complete farce. They have just waived the general tax component of the property tax that ranges from 10 per cent to 30 per cent of the total tax structure. The proposal forwarded by the Shiv Sena-controlled BMC to the state government in July 2017 recommended that the entire property tax be waived. However, the state government waived off just a fraction of the tax,” he said.

Reacting to this, Mr Shelar said that the general tax component of property tax changes from 10 per cent to 30 per cent  were according to the water connections of the structure.
