PM’s niece robbed off Rs 56,000, documents and cellphones

New Delhi: Despite various claims by the Delhi police, snatchers robbed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s niece on Saturday. The incident was reported in the Civil Lines area of North Delhi. The criminals snatched two mobile phones and Rs 56,000 from her when she was travelling in an auto-rickshaw.

The Delhi police top brass went into a tizzy after a call was made to the police control room (PCR) about the shocking incident.

The spot where she was attacked by the criminals is just a few kilometres away from the residences of lieutenant-governor Anil Baijal and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.

The victim, 40-year-old Damayanti Ben Modi, the daughter of the Prime Minister’s brother, was carrying Rs 56,000 cash, two mobile phones, and some important documents in the purse which was snatched by miscreants.

According to a senior police official, Ms Damyanti was getting off an auto-rickshaw near the Gujarati Samaj Bhawan in Civil Lines at around 7.00 am on Saturday when two persons came riding on a two-wheeler and snatched her purse containing documents and valuables.

“She made a call to the police control room (PCR) about the incident, following which a team was dispatched for the spot. The police has recorded her statement and a case of snatching has been filed with the Civil Lines police station,” said the senior police official.

As per information, Ms Damyanti told the cops that she has come from Amritsar and her room is booked at the Gujarati Samaj Bhawan in the Civil Lines area. She has come with her father Prahlad Modi. She said she hired an auto-rickshaw from old Delhi to reach her destination.

“I reached the Gujarati Samaj Bhawan and was getting off the auto-rickshaw when the snatchers targeted me. I was taken aback when they snatched my bag. I was about to give money from it to the auto-driver. It happened all of a sudden and I couldn’t understand as to what was going on,” she said.

“The police has identified the accused and teams have been formed who are analysing the CCTV footage from Old Delhi railway station to Civil Lines to nab the culprits. Some suspects have been detained and police teams are questioning them,” said DCP (North district) Monika Bharadwaj.
