Prime Minister Manmohan Singh acknowledged on Thursday that the possibility exists of SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav withdrawing support to the UPA government later this year, while, in the same breath, he expressed “confidence” that his government would complete its full five years and the election to the next Lok Sabha would take place on schedule.

The PM also admitted that the government did not have a majority in Parliament to push through some of the reform proposals as they were now dependent on the goodwill of allies. Dr Singh was responding to pointed questions from the media on the UPA’s support base in Parliament on his return journey home from the Brics Summit in Durban. Dr Singh sought to allay fears of China running the Brahmaputra river dry with the dams it is building in Tibet, though he said he had failed to get China’s commitment to allow India on-the-spot assessment of what exactly it is up to in the river basin. Dr Singh said he had raised the issue of trans-border river systems in his first official engagement with the new Chinese President, Mr Xi Jinping, in Durban.
