Naxal sympathisers in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Delhi are under police scanner, the Chhattisgarh police said on Sunday.

Naxal sympathisers in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Delhi are under police scanner, the Chhattisgarh police said on Sunday.

“They are under surveillance,” Bastar inspector general of police (IGP) S.R.P Kalluri told this newspaper on phone on Sunday. He, however, refused to elaborate, saying “It is a serious matter”.

Earlier in the afternoon, talking to reporters at Jagdalpur, headquarters of Bastar, Mr Kalluri indicated the police had already identified Naxal networks in JNU and Delhi and would soon bust them.

“The Naxal aides in JNU and Delhi would soon be arrested,” Mr Kalluri said.

Denying reports appeared in a section of media purportedly quoting the CBI probe report on alleged excesses by security forces in three villages of Dantewada in March 2011 — where 160 tribal houses were torched — Mr Kalluri, who was posted there as SSP then, said fierce encounters between the security forces and Naxals had led to destruction of the huts.

“Security forces did not set the tribal huts on fire. The fierce encounters between security forces and ultras had led to destruction of the huts. Three security personnel were killed in the encounters”, he said.

“This was the place where 76 CRPF personnel were killed by Maoists in 2010. Even, during probe by CBI into the violent incidents in three tribal villages, several encounters took place between cops and rebels”, he added.

He said police had given its version on the incident to CBI.

CBI has filed a status report on the incident before Supreme Court a couple of days ago.

“A campaign has been launched by some NGOs and vested interests to defame security forces deployed in counterinsurgency to shatter their morale”, he said, adding, “Security forces are close to freeing Bastar of Maoist influence completely”.
