All-India Students’ Federation (AISF) leader and former JNU Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar on Monday accused the Narendra Modi government of hyping the Indian Army’s surgical operations in the Pak-occupied Kashmir (PoK) to divert public attention from its “failures.”

Addressing the ‘Azadi Samavesh’ organised by AISF here, Mr Kumar said while the soldiers are defending the borders by putting their lives into danger, the Modi government is busy in patting itself on its back.

“All credit goes to the soldiers who crossed over to the PoK and destroyed the terrorist camps. It’s quite ridiculous that the Modi government is trying to get political gains out of the heroic exploits our soldiers,” he said.

Calling for non-military solutions to rising tension between India and Pakistan, the student leader said hyping surgical operations has given rise to serious tensions in the Indian sub-continent.

“As the Narendra Modi government has failed miserably to keep its pre-poll promises, it is resorting to play up some issues, including the surgical strikes by the Indian Army in PoK,” he observed.

“What is the need of punishing the country (Pakistan) which is dying without adequate water,” the student leader said.

“Where Shias are killing Sunnis and Sunnis are taking on the Shias That country does not have sufficient foodgrain to feed its people. It lacks education and struggles to cope with huge unemployment problem. There is no point India entering into conflict with Pakistan,” he maintained.

Stating that tension between India and Pakistan is driving both countries to a vicious circle of violence and conflicts, the student leader said when there is no need for a military solution to the problem. “The NDA government was unnecessarily stressing on it,” he said.

Earlier, the activists of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) protested against Mr Kumar and showed black flags to him on his arrival in the city. Besides, a portion of the stage where he was scheduled to address was set on fire by some unidentified miscreants.
