Spouse of former union minister Dr. Mallikarjun, Mrs. Bhagyalakshmi Mallikarjun along with son Mr. Manu Mallikarjun called on the Hon’ble Governor of Haryana Shri Bandaru Dattatreya at Raj Bhavan in Chandigarh, to request his presence as Chief Guest at the statue unveiling ceremony to take place at Hyderabad in a few weeks’ time.

A 6-time Member of Parliament, Dr. Mallikarjun represented Mahabubnagar parliamentary constituency four times and was elected twice from Medak. His service to the nation spanned decades, during which he held several critical portfolios including Defence, Railways, Parliamentary Affairs, I&B and Sports, in the cabinets of Prime Ministers Smt. Indira Gandhi and Shri P.V. Narasimha Rao. He also held the position of APCC President, between 1996 and 1998.

While a student of Osmania University, he entered politics in 1969 as the leader of the students-led agitation for Telangana statehood. He went on to tirelessly serve the country and later founded and lead the Congress Forum for Telangana, a pressure group within Indian National Congress demanding statehood for Telangana, a cause for which he worked until his untimely demise on 24th December, 2002.
