If you are planning to visit Kolkata, be sure to try a plate of Kolkata special Biryani that has a royal history of its own. This Biryani offers a dish full of aromatic rice, a piece of meat, and well-seasoned potato, which makes this unique and special. For Kolkatans, this yellow tender Potato is considered to be the soul of the Biryani. This Kolkata special Biryani has evolved from the Lucknow Biryani and managed to expand its popularity with the passing time.

Aminia, a casual fine dining restaurant, has been serving the famous Kolkata Biryani and varieties of delectable Mughlai/ Awadhi dishes since the year 1929 when they opened their first outlet at Zakaria Street. Aminia has a huge contribution in shaping up Kolkata as a Biryani paradise.

This history of Kolkata biryani dates back to the year 1856, when the king of Awadh Sultan Wajid Ali Shah was banished by the Britishers and arrived in Kolkata along with his entire team of cooks and kitchen staffs. When his chefs tried to make the Lucknow style biryani, the scarcity of money put them in a grave difficulty. It was then that he along with his chefs decided to innovate a local version of it. After, experimenting with vegetables, they finally came up with the plan of replacing the meat with potato. Hence, unlike the other varieties of Biryani, Kolkata Biryani has only one or two pieces of meat and one mandatory piece of potato.

Aminia, to this date, has been one of the prime eateries in Kolkata that serves authentic Awadhi/ Mughlai cuisine. Their most popular outlet is in the Futnani Chamber near the Kolkata Municipal Corporation in Sir Stuart Hogg Market or New Market. This outlet was established on 15th August, 1947. Today, Aminia has a total of 9 outlets across Kolkata. They have kept the interiors of all the outlets simple yet sophisticated.

Apart from the Biryani, dishes like Mutton Pasinda Kebab, Chicken Reshmi Kebab, Chicken Tikka Kebab, Aminia Special Curry, Mutton Galawati Kebab, Chicken/ Mutton Chaap are worth your time and money. They also have desserts like Firni, Saffron Milk Cake, Gajar Ka Halwa which are the perfect ending to any meal.

“We have been maintaining our authentic recipes since its inception. Most of our recipes were curated by my grandfather. We have been sincerely loyal to his recipes and that is why the taste of our dishes has remained unchanged. We are also constantly experimenting and trying out new things to offer our clientele with varieties. We have introduced many new dishes over the years and are trying our best to keep our clientele pleased” said Mohammed Azhar, Managing Director of Aminia.

Do visit Aminia, the taste you love, to treat with the best of the flavours of Mughlai and Awadhi cuisine.
