They waited 12 years for a victory at the Olympic Games, and just four days into the Rio Games, the Indian men’s hockey team set hopes soaring with two wins from three matches.

Twenty-four hours after losing 1-2 to Olympic champions Germany in a heart-stopping loss with just 3.1 seconds left to play, Sreejesh P.R.’s men dished out a strong show, defeating Argentina 2-1. This was their first win over the South Americans since 2009.

With the result, India took a firm step towards sealing a quarter-final berth. They are currently second in Pool B with six points, behind Germany.

Goals from Chinglensana Singh (8th minute) and Kothajit Singh (35th) gave India a handy 2-0 lead, while Argentina struck through Gonzalo Peillat in the 49th minute to create some late pressure.

Goalkeeper Sreejesh played his role to perfection, effecting numerous saves in the final quarter as India hung on to gain three vital points.
