I was typecast as foreign returned, says Pooja Batra

Pooja Batra, the tall and pretty actress, has given her share of hits in the ’90s. However, the actress says that she was typecast as a foreign returned in most of her films back then.

“I was typecast when I was in India — it was always foreign returned, it was always the modern version. As an actress, we are supposed to morph into another character and that’s the fun,” Pooja Batra said.

“If you continuously do the same thing then it’s very redundant. I had consciously made an effort to choose those roles that were opposite from my previous one,” she added.

Pooja is known for her Bollywood films like Virasat, Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya, Haseena Maan Jaayegi among others before moving to the US. She is currently busy promoting her thriller film Mirror Game.

The actress, however, also feels not too many films are being written for actresses in Bollywood.

She says, “I would have been happier had I got better offers… for women, movies are not made. And they turn around and say that actresses can’t sell a film.”

She continues, “But if movies like Mary Kom and Kahaani can sell solely on the basis of the main lead who happened to be females and if one is backed by a strong script and a good filmmaker, then I don’t see why it can’t work,” she added.

The upcoming flick  Mirror Game: Ab Khel Shuru, which also stars actor Parvin Dabas and is directed by Vijit Sharma,  is releasing on June 2. Pooja plays the role of a police psychologist called Dr Roy.

On her love for thrillers, Pooja says, “I love thrillers, it’s part of the emotion that triggers excitement and plays with the mind on the need to know what will happen next”

However, she also feels that thriller doesn’t work in India because it’s not written well. “Thrillers are not done well, especially in our country because the scripts are not written well.”
