The Delhi government on Wednesday launched the pilot scheme of installing WiFi, Global Positioning System (GPS) and closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in six Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses. The initiative was launched by Delhi transport minister Gopal Rai.

Each bus will have three CCTV cameras at the front and the rear, while a third camera will be fixed next to the driver. In the initial phase, the cameras have been installed in ISBT-Airport bus service, Mudrika Sewa and Outer Mudrika Sewa.

“Stickers will also be pasted on the seats of these buses to inform the riders about how to use the WiFi services in these buses,” Mr Rai said.

A commuter can use the WiFi only for 10 minutes with a speed of 1 mbps. The three companies that collaborated with the Delhi government for the this project are Airtel, Reliance and Bhumi Entek.

Urging commuters to use WiFi and share their feedback on social media, the transport minister said: “After using the WiFi in the buses, we request the commuters to send their feedback via e-mail at aamadmiwifi@gmail.com or to tweet at #aamadmiwifi. Once the trial run gets completed, we will invite the companies to collaborate in the project through the tender, and by March all DTC buses will have GPS system and WiFi.
