In order to curb corruption in the government machinery, Delhi Congress president Ajay Maken has urged chief minister Arvind to immediately speed up the process for enactment of the Jan Lokpal Act in the national capital. The party has reportedly decided to hold a demonstration against the delay in the enactment of the anti-graft law outside the Delhi Assembly on November 18.

In a letter to the chief minister, Mr Maken said he was extremely disappointed with the delay in enacting the Jan Lokpal law. “Though an extremely hard sold promise by your party during both the Assembly elections (2013 and 2015), it has been time and again delayed by your government. The latest reports suggest that, you have yet again decided not to table the bill even during the coming session of the Delhi Legislative Assembly.”

Mr Maken said that in wake of recent cases of corruption in Mr Kejriwal’s Cabinet and the allegations of irregularities in procurement of onions and sugar, the need and importance of the anti-graft law can not be taken lightly.

The letter said: “Nonetheless, it is also quite ironical that the party that had quit the government on the issue of delay in enacting the Jan Lokpal law, has failed to even get the basic clearance for its own Cabinet despite being in power for nine months in its second term. Especially, after making high pitch about the same during elections and repeated personal assurance by your good-self, such unexplained delay is a blatant betrayal to the people of Delhi.”

Mr Maken said since the Kejriwal government came to power, the Delhi Assembly has already met six times and almost on every occasion the only business executed in the House pertained to the topics of “self-manufactured” rift between the city government and the Centre. “Even the delay in the crucial Budget Session was a consequence of the same.”
