A 50-year-old businessman was abducted and his brother was shot at by unidentified assailants in front of Old Shaheen Bagh police post in southeast Delhi’s Jamia Nagar area on Sunday night.

Preliminary investigations suggest the case is linked to personal enmity. Family members have alleged that the cops at the police post did not come to their assistance. The victims, identified as Mohammed Khalid, who was adducted, and his brother Mohammed Shakil (35). Khalid, who runs a building material business in Shaheen Bagh, was rescued by the cops later and Shakil was admitted to the hospital.

Sources said that family has named one Rashid Qureshi as the person responsible for the incident.

“Rashid Qureshi had taken material of Rs 40,000 from Khalid and was not paying for that despite repeated reminders,” said the police, adding, “On Sunday night, Qureshi called Khalid near Shaheen Bagh police post on the pretext of making the payment.” However, as soon as Khalid reached the spot, Qureshi’s men started beating up Khalid. “In the meantime someone informed Khalid’s family about the commotion and his brother Shakil, mother and wife rushed to the spot,” said the cops, adding, “Rashid Qureshi’s men on seeing them opened indiscriminate firing and one of the bullets hit Shakil in the hand.”

“At least 6-7 rounds were fired.”

Before escaping from the spot, the assailants abducted an injured Khalid. He was later rescued from a deserted area a few kilometres away. The police said a call to PCR was made and Shakil was taken to the hospital where he is recuperating.

Investigating officials said that they are tracing Qureshi for interrogation and a case under relevant sections has been registered at the Jamia Nagar police station. Further probe is on.
