A 20-year-old youth was shot at outside his house by unidentified assailants in southeast Delhi’s Sangam Vihar area on Sunday night.

According to the police, the incident is suspected to be the outcome of an ongoing gang war between two groups. The victim has been identified as Mohammed Azharuddin.

The victim was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre, where he is believed to be out of danger. The bullet grazed past Azharuddin’s neck, for which he had to undergo a surgery, said a police official.

The police said that late Sunday evening Azhar was called out of his house in Tigri locality by some unidentified men. “As soon as he walked up to some meters near his house, he was shot at by the assailants who had come on a motorcycle,” said a senior police officer, adding, “Before anybody could react, the assailants and the men who had called him out fled the scene.”

Locals called up the police control room and Azharuddin was rushed to the hospital. A case of attempt to murder was registered and investigation was taken up.

The police said that during investigations it was learnt that Azhar’s cousin Iqbal was shot dead in Malviya Nagar a few days ago. That incident was the outcome of a gang war between Deepak Pandit and Ravi Gangwal gangs. “For sometime Deepak Pandit’s gang was being run by Iqbal, who was killed for revenge for the murder of one Raju Baba of Ravi Gangwal gang,” said the senior police officer, adding, “The rival gang had executed their plan to kill Iqbal and has been looking for an opportunity to kill his cousin Azharuddin since then as they suspected that he was involved in Raju Babu’s killing.”

“We are scrutinising the CCTV footages of the area where the incident took place and have got some clues,” said the investigating official, adding that “we have also detained a few suspected accused”.
