BENGALURU: Shikhar Dhawan was getting good starts in the recent series against West Indies, but he failed to convert them into big numbers. Against South Africa at Mohali, Dhawan fell 10 runs short of a half-century.

“For me, it is normal that 4-5 innings can go here and there. For you guys, it’s not normal. I know my process. I’m a keen observer of everything that I’m doing. I make sure I do it in a very detailed manner. Sometimes, these strategies do not go your way, but it’s a part of the journey. I always back myself because I know what hard work I’ve put in and things will go good for me,” said Dhawan.

 Along with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Dhawan is one of the senior players in the side.

He said communication plays a key role. “With youngsters like Rishabh and Shreyas coming, we as seniors make sure, we communicate and calm their nerves. We make them think about what is needed at that particular moment. Even we keep discussing and communication is very important. Anytime any youngster wants to talk we are always open,” Dhawan added.

Dhawan represented India ‘A’ before joining the senior side for the T20s.

“Match practice is the best preparation so I thought it was a good opportunity for me to go and express myself. So I went to Thiruvananthapuram and played against these boys and it was good. Since I was not part of the Test series I had enough break.

“After this, I will go and play Vijay Hazare and I’m looking forward to that as well. I want to make sure that whatever cricket I play I play with all my heart. I’m a big believer in process and it doesn’t matter whether it is Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare or the Indian team,” added Shikhar.

Talking about the importance of the matches in the run-up to the T20 World Cup, Dhawan said: “By the time we reach the World Cup we are refined and we know our roles with great clarity, which is very important.”
