Mumbai: A 20-year-old medical student came all the way from Iraq to the state-run J.J. Hospital and underwent a successful surgery to treat scoliosis, a condition in which the spine curves to the left or right, creating a C- or S- shaped curve.

Eman Ameen, the Iraqi patient, suffered from breathlessness, back pain and a hunch back. In severe cases, pressure on the spinal cord may cause loss of coordination of the leg muscles, making it difficult for the patient to walk normally.

If the chest is deformed due to scoliosis, the lungs and heart may be affected, leading to breathing problems, fatigue and even heart failure.

Scoliosis surgeon Dr Deeraj Sonawane who performed the surgery said, “She managed to get the WhatsApp number and sent images of her X-rays. As she was not that sound financially, her first option was a government hospital. It came as a surprise to her that all her treatments were carried out at minimal expense.”

Dr Sonawane further said that Eman was investigated with a special scoliosis X-ray machine and underwent blood transfusion through auto-transfusion to reduce adverse reactions.

Eman’s parents said, “We are very happy to see the speedy results of the surgery and we express our heartfelt gratitude to the J.J. Hospital team.”
