New Delhi: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Thursday requested the Election Commission to initiate the process for criminal proceedings against National Conference’s Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah and PDP’s Mehbooba Mufti for “openly inciting people for sedition to divide” the country on the basis of religion over their remarks on Article 370.

The Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) affiliate also urged the poll body to disbar the leaders from holding public meetings, processions, rallies and road shows in the poll season.

VHP international working president Alok Kumar, its national spokesperson Vinod Bansal among others, met the EC officials and submitted the memorandum, which alleged that the former chief ministers of Jammu Kashmir and their outfits “have no faith in the Constitution of India.”

Attaching newspapers clippings of some of the quotes and tweets of the three leaders, the VHP said their remarks are “direct invasion on the Constitution and naked attack on the constitutional   authorities made to undermine the majesty of the nation and the supremacy of Constitutional institutions like Supreme Court, Parliament, the Election Commission” and “the sovereign authority of the nation has been put to serious challenge.”
